Square with rounded corners: iOS automatically applies corner radius masking, so design your icon as a full square. Android applies adaptive icon masking, so keep important elements within the safe zone (center 66% of the icon).

Keep it simple: Your icon appears as small as 40×40 pixels. Complex details, gradients with many stops, and thin lines will become indistinguishable blobs at small sizes. Test your design at 48×48 before finalizing.

Avoid text in icons: Text in app icons is nearly illegible at small sizes and doesn't localize. Use imagery and color to communicate your app's purpose.

Use a distinct silhouette: The best icons are recognizable by their shape alone. Instagram (camera), Spotify (sound waves), and Slack (hashtag) all have instantly recognizable silhouettes.
